The primary claim of this talk is that the emerging field of legal epidemiology offers tools for countering structural stigma in law and social policy. Because such stigma intensifies harms against the most marginalized and vulnerable communities, anti-stigma interventions are a priority in advancing the twin aims of health and social justice:

• Improving overall population health; and

• Compressing health inequities.

In the talk, I will defend this claim in four parts. First, I explain the idea that law as a major social determinant of health. Second, I explain how stigma is a structural phenomenon and how its amelioration is a priority for health and social justice. Third, I will describe the basic foundations of legal epidemiology and show how its methods can be used to design interventions for countering structural stigma. Fourth, I will describe two legal interventions based on legal epidemiologic evidence that can be used to address structural stigma.
