In March 2025, IBHH Assistant Professor Dr. Stephen Molldrem was honored with the Rose Grundfest Schneider Award. Dr. Schneider was a pioneering hemoglobin researcher at UTMB of international acclaim. After Rose Grundfest Schneider passed away in 2003 at the age of 95, her daughter, Nancy Schneider Heller, established the Rose Grundfest Schneider, PhD Award to honor her mother’s memory and her many significant contributions to the field of medical research and humanitarian causes. A pioneer in Texas medicine, Dr. Schneider’s association with UTMB lasted for more than 45 years. She served on the faculty of UTMB for 31 years, expanding access to health care for the underserved; incorporating insights from the humanities into health care and health sciences education; applying rigorous biomedical science to defeat diseases of the blood; and furthering the health of children.
